Provided by: Collegiate Inventors Competition
Deadline: June 16, 2009
Type of Award: Academic Contest
Awards Available Amount
12$2000 - $25000

Additional Information

OBJECTIVES

Introduced in 1990, the Collegiate Inventors Competition has recognized, rewarded, and encouraged hundreds of students to share their inventive ideas with the world. The Competition promotes exploration in invention, science, engineering, technology, and other creative endeavors and provides a window on the technologies from which society will benefit in the future.

ELIGIBILITY

Students must be enrolled (or have been enrolled) full-time in any U.S. or Canadian college or university at least part of the 12-month period prior to the date the entry is submitted. In the case of a team (maximum of four students), at least one member of the team must meet the full-time eligibility criteria. The other team members must have been enrolled on a part-time basis (at a minimum) sometime during the 24-month period prior to the date the entry is submitted.

JUDGING

The committee of judges represents various fields, including mathematics, engineering, biology, chemistry, physics, information technology, materials science, and medicine.

Entries are judged on the originality and inventiveness of the new idea, process, or technology. The entry must be complete, workable, and well articulated. Entries are also judged on their potential value to society (socially, environmentally, and economically), and on the scope of use. The judges' decisions are final.

AWARDS

Each year up to 12 finalists receive an all-expenses paid trip to present their work to a panel of expert judges. Each finalist or finalist team will also receive a $2000 cash prize.

One Undergraduate and one Graduate winner or team each receive $15,000. One Grand Prize winner or team receives $25,000. Academic advisors of each winning team also receive a cash award.

The Official Entry Form will be posted in the near future.

  • Download the official entry form.
  • The entry form must be completed and assembled along with the required information.
  • Hard copies must be mailed to the Collegiate Inventors Competition. E-mails or faxes will not be accepted.
  • Please email us at collegiate@invent.org if you encounter problems accessing the application. We will be happy to email you a copy.

REQUIREMENTS

The entry must be the original idea and work product of the student/advisor team, and must not have been (1) made available to the public as a commercial product or process or (2) patented or published more than 1 year prior to the date of submission to the competition. The entry submitted must be written in English.

The invention, a reduced-to-practice idea or workable model, must be the work of a student or team of students with his or her university advisor. If it is a machine, it must be operable. If it is a chemical, it must be complete with evidence of successful application of the idea. If it is a new plant, color photographs or slides must be included in the submission. If a new or original ornamental design for an article of manufacture is submitted, the entire design must be included in the application. In addition, the invention should be reproducible.

Do not send your invention. Finalists will be notified and given instructions to send any necessary documentation. A university transcript must be provided at that time to verify student status.

DEADLINE

  • The deadline for entering the 2008 Collegiate Inventors Competition has passed. The deadline for entering the 2009 Collegiate Inventors Competition is TBD. Applications will be available soon.

TIPS FOR PREPARING ENTRIES

The following suggestions may help you in preparing your entry. Although these things will not guarantee a winner, they are traits consistently found in past winning applications:

  • TYPED with pages numbered and stapled together (not permanently bound).
  • CLEAR and to the point. What is your invention? It is important to articulate what the invention is and why it is an invention. The judges want to know specifically what you are adding to the technology. After writing your submission, consider asking a colleague to read it for clarity. It may also help to have someone review it who is not familiar with your work. Spelling and grammatical errors affect how your entry is judged.
  • CONCISE. The more concise the better. Avoid jargon. Superfluous materials (i.e., research papers done on another subject matter that are submitted as appendices) detract from a strong entry. In order to get maximum scoring points, be sure that your essay covers all requested information.
  • COMPLETE. A checklist is included in the application for your convenience.
  • CONVINCING. It is up to you to convince judges that your entry is the best of many high quality inventions. Although the judges are experienced researchers, they may not be familiar with your particular project or specialty. Describe your work in the most positive, comprehensible manner, understandable to a scientifically literate person (i.e., like what is published in Scientific American or Nature publications).

CHECKLIST

The application must include:

  • Student Information
  • Student Essay, including supplementary material
  • Literature Research
  • Advisor Information
  • Advisor Letter
  • Statement of Student Enrollment Status
  • Student/Advisor Release Form

Send four (4) sets of your completed application form and any supplementary material. Staple or hinge-clip each application packet. DO NOT assemble it in any permanent type of binding.

PARTICIPATION IN THE EUROPEAN ELECTIONS

1-8 May, 2009, Sofia

The National Student Confederation, Europe House-Sofia, JEF and UEF-Bulgaria have the pleasure of inviting you to participate in the international training course "Raising Citizens Activity and Encouraging Youth Participation in the European Elections".

The European elections in June 2009 are an excellent opportunity to further engage the young citizens with the European project. A whole generation born after the Fall of the Iron Curtain will vote for the first time in European elections. That there is a need to educate young people to take part in elections is not an issue. However, the turnout is lower than that in national elections and there's an overall perception that voting in European Parliament elections "doesn't change anything".

The training course "Raising Citizens Activity and Encouraging Youth Participation in the European Elections" to be held in Sofia from 1 to 8 May 2009 will meet the need to inform the new European generation how the EU works and the rights and obligations the EU citizenship brings in order to encourage them to vote in the European elections and contribute to boost the turnout.

The political, social, economic and cultural aspects that the course addresses will contribute to shape a vision how to strengthen European democracy and counteract the rise nationalist and eurosceptic movements who deny the concept of European citizenship.

The participants will gain practical knowledge how to communicate the EU ÔÏ the young citizens and build capacity for organization of information events during the election campaign. The ideas and knowledge generated during the seminar can be used by every participant and be implemented at local level.

The project will involve governmental officials, elected representatives, as well as scholars, activists of civil society organizations and, most importantly, the participants themselves in a series of debates.

The rich social program, including horse ride in Vitosha mountain (optional) and sightseeing trip to the Rila Monastery, one of the most significant and picturesque monuments on the Balkans, will enable the participants to feel the atmosphere of Bulgaria - an ever-evolving and modern country with great cultural heritage and traditions, dating back from Roman and Byzantine times.

PARTICIPATING CONDITIONS

Age 18-30

Countries EU Member states

Costs 70% of Travel Costs will be reimbursed (up to 230 Euro)

The Havighurst Center’s Annual Young Researchers Conference

Organizer: Neringa Klumbyte, Anthropology

Miami University, Oxford, Ohio

October 15-18, 2009

1989: Then and Now

The 20th anniversary of 1989 is a good occasion to re-visit some of the grand debates about the meaning of this annus mirabilis and to re-think the processes that led up to it. We invite paper proposals that seek to rekindle scholarly exchanges about the precursors of the events of 1989 through 1991 (e.g. reformist ideas launched by communist leaders in the late 1950s and the late 1960s, modes of anti-regime mobilization in both Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union); about the intertwining of processes of societal transformation and the evolution of ruling
communist parties; and about the main social and political developments that precipitated the implosion of one-party regimes. We are also interested in research projects that locate the late 1980s/early 1990s into analytical frameworks that explore both broader patterns of political turbulence in the Soviet bloc and the historical specificity of identifiable moments of crisis. Finally, we ask what is the cultural, historical, and political significance of 1989. We encourage cross-disciplinary explorations of the relative significance of various factors - cultural, social, economic, institutional, ideological, geo-political - that brought about the end of Marxist regimes in the former Second world.

We encourage proposals from young researchers who have already completed their dissertation research (ABD) or have defended their dissertation within the last three years. This will be an intensive 2 day working conference during which each of the selected papers will be critiqued by the other participants, including the authors, the keynote speaker, organizer Neringa Klumbyte, Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Miami University, and a team of discussants made up of Miami University faculty. The Havighurst Center will provide accommodation in Oxford,
ground transportation to and from the airport, and partial travel funding (up to $250 for domestic travel and up to $500 for international travel).

To be considered for the conference, submit an abstract of approximately 250 words and a short CV to mailto:HavighurstCenter@ muohio.edu by May 1, 2009. Selected papers will be announced by June 1, 2009.

Call for Papers

University American College Skopje is proud to initiate the fourth annual academic research conference on European integration

Europe in Crisis: Threats and Opportunities

This inter- and multi-disciplinary one-day conference seeks to explore the current global crisis and its consequences for the future of European integration. The underlying assumption is that a crisis poses threats to existing structures, values and achievements, but also opens opportunities for critical reassessment and improved solutions to exigent problems. As a hosting academic institution of this conference we aim to emphasise and explore the contribution that academia can make to catalyse an adequate response to the crisis.

Key issues to be addressed include:

What are the defining characteristics of the current economic crisis and what distinguishes it from earlier ones? What impact does the economic downturn have on international relations and the process of EU integration in particular? How does the current crisis change the perception of Europe and the policy of EU enlargement both within the EU and in the accession countries? What kind of business strategies can be adopted for economies in the downturn? Does the crisis create opportunities (e.g. low transport costs and fast delivery; use of IT solutions and open software, etc)? Are interventions in the financial sector sufficient to prevent further instability? Does a crisis of this magnitude trigger critical reconsideration of the idea of Europe and the value systems which inform its materialisation? How can political, social and cultural considerations contribute to comprehensive solutions to the new reality?

By tradition, key speakers and high level officials from the country and from abroad are invited to address the conference.

Abstracts due: Tue 14 April 2009, send them to: conference@uacs. edu.mk

Notification of acceptance: Tue 21 April 2009
Papers due: Fri 22 May 2009
Conference date: Fri 29 May 2009

The working language of the conference is English. Looking to encourage an informed dialogue, we welcome papers (no less than 3000 words) by scholars and professionals from any discipline including but not limited to economics, law and political sciences, IT, sociology, philosophy, religion and cultural studies. 300 word abstracts should be submitted by email to: conference@uacs. edu.mk. Abstracts should be written in Word or RTF formats, font Times New Roman or Arial size 12, following this order: author(s), affiliation, email address, title of abstract, body of abstract, key words.

Due to overwhelming response to previous conferences, this year the number of participants presenting at the main sessions will be limited to those who submit papers of highest quality and relevance. Microbial Ecology Research Group
The research group Microbial Ecology is part of the Centre for Ecological and Evolutionary Studies (CEES) in the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of the University of Groningen. The group studies the adaptive strategies of prokaryotic microorganisms that allow these to survive in complex natural habitats. One of the topics focuses on the role of microbial diversity in ecosystem functioning. The research is strongly multidisciplinary and includes microbiology, ecology, molecular biology and plant physiology and ecology. The group provides a lively and internationally oriented scientific environment with excellent facilities.

Project
A major goal in general ecology is to understand the role of biodiversity in ecosystem functioning. Ecological theory predicts that ecosystems with a higher diversity of species are more productive and more stable in the face of stresses and environmental fluctuations. Amongst the different components of biodiversity, the diversity of functional traits of species in a community is considered to be the best predictor of the related ecosystem process. In this context, we recently used experimental communities of bacterial species to evaluate the role of bacterial functional diversity on community processes. Diversity had indeed a positive effect on community function and we were able to demonstrate the relevance of the complementarity of species for resource use capacity in shaping biodiversity- ecosystem functioning relationships. The main goal of this PhD project is to use a similar model system to address the role of bacterial diversity in respect of the stability of the communities. You will be responsible for designing experiments with bacterial communities to test theories related to the diversity-stability relationship. You will apply classical microbiological methods to determine community functioning. You will develop and apply molecular methods for the quantification of bacterial species, as well as statistical models to untangle the effects of diversity components on community stability. The project will be carried out in collaboration with the Microbial Ecology center (UMR5557, Université Lyon1) in Lyon, France.

Requirements
You have a Masters degree or equivalent degree in microbiology/ microbial ecology, with a strong background in general ecology or in ecology with interest in working with microbial model systems. Experience with the application of molecular methods in the study of the complex communities is an advantage. The project is demanding and asks for dedication as well as a creative mind. Good proficiency of the English language is required. The Ph.D. candidate is expected to attend a few courses and to assist in teaching students at different levels (10% of time).
